The INTENTION with this blog is to update with not only regularity, but frequency. So in that vein, here's a small write-up, but only a week after my last post.
I'm pleasantly surprised by how popular my YouTube channel is! Lots of hits, lots of subscriptions.
September 8th's Wednesday Show featured some fun (slightly hoarse) tunes. I styled the wig I won from the In 'N' Out "Girls on the Go" audition, and now it's a super-cute sort of 40's brush-out look. It was a big hit. My setlist for the night:

I was super disappointed the black eye didn't get more ...reactions. There were chuckles, at least. But c'mon, a makeup black eye and a fur arm sling? I thought that would at LEAST get some pity money. Haha oh well. It WAS my last individual number, and those are never the big clean-up numbers--or really, numbers that make any money at all. haha
It was also a farewell party for a departing Queen named Sandy Shores. She didn't work at TC's, but brought a big farewell crew, and I think they had a good time. It was nice to give some people a nice send-off celebration. One of Tanya's friends (who was also Sandy's friend...? Maybe?) recorded a good chunk of the evening. I'm in the group video (but left out of the credits, sad face), but I've included the video featuring some of my individual performances. The hot mess Liza number is in there, where the nerves are VISIBLE on my face. But there's some good stuff in there, so I hope you enjoy the compilation.
Saturday, September 11th was Jenny Larue's fundraising carwash. Tanya and I came out to support her, all tarted up, and we raised a little bit of money. I worked the sign on the corner, which resulted in a nice light sunburn on my shoulders with an awkward tan line. haha but for a good cause. Also, to explain the title of this post, September 11th was Gay Pride in Savannah, GA. I missed everyone terrrrrrrribly. It would have been nice to go back and work as was the plan back in April, but I've spent all summer making unreturned phone calls and sending Emails without a reply. Oh well. I guess when I go back in October to visit, it'll only be a visit. I did send flowers though, so hopefully they enjoyed those. Hard to believe that only one year ago, I was in rehearsals for Hedwig and the Angry Inch, barely just thinking about trying to get an audition to join Club One's cast. It's been an eventful year for me. <3

Said the daddy tomato to the baby tomato...
Yes, I've been gone a little while. So it's time to Catch up (or 'Ketchup', if you're curious about the post title). When last I left you, I had just garnered myself my very first (and still only) $100 tip. The guy who gave it to me took me to the Miss Gay Texas USofA pageant that Friday (August 22), where three girls from work were competing. Ashleey Houston didn't make top twelve, Raven St. James did, but not top 5, and Adeciya Iman came in First Runner-Up (second place). Not bad, three competitors from the same bar.
The pageant was lovely. I finally saw TX celebqueens like Tommie Ross and Kourtney Paige van Wales (whose pictures do her no justice). It was also my first big pageant like that, and seeing the reactions to... certain things makes me nervous about my performance should I ever choose to enter one. It certainly favored the ridiculously over-the-top, I'll say that. But hey, it's Texas.
August 25th was a work night, and I busted out a LOT of drag tricks... but mostly just a lot of fake hair. Oh, and a see-through dress. I performed:

If that seems like a lot of songs IT IS. Instead of our usual long 3-hour show, Tanya wanted to do a long[er] show based on the number of songs we performed. So three hours became 4.5 as we all did EIGHT SONGS. I had chosen all big belt numbers, maybe you noticed, so I was not prepared for two extra numbers, but it was ok. "Alone" was a little strained, but no one was still there anyway--well, no one sober enough to really care, I think. Still a good time. Pics on Facebook. :)
August 28th found me at In 'N' Out for the "Girls on the Go" new traveling Drag Troupe auditions. I was pretty certain I was making the cut regardless, but we still need to audition, of course. Alongside me for the night was Amber LeMay Fox, Ebony State, and Erica Champagne. And at the last minute, a queen we didn't know arrived, Ms. Michelle ... uh... Michelle... Michaels? ...not sure. Anyway, Diane Jackson opened the show for us (after a last-minute group number was added). Judges Sherry-Lynne, Alexandria, Tanya, and Travis (from In 'N' Out) scored us based on... I'm not sure, very specific criteria. :/ We had to do one fast and one slow song, so I chose "Good Morning, Baltimore" and "Maybe This Time". The bar was HOT, but the staging was nice, and I sort of re-met John the bartender who was a little past tipsy. But the show was fun. We ended up ranking, and I won third place, which got me a new wig, some lashes, and a photoshoot with local ...uh, "mentor" Vanity Wilde. Very exciting!

........and I decided I should finally have a one-stop Violet shop on YouTube. So I made my very own channel!! Mom didn't have the camera for the shows this week BUT you can see some of what I did and wore by watching me IN MOTION! Check out the channel. Looking forward to your feedback, and hoping it's all positive. <3

Life, oh the ups and downs
Wellll time again for some recap action; two weeks since my last post:
With a new month comes new show songs, and August has us now doing THREE group numbers. I suppose it's good to be able to fill the time with something certain and constant, but I haven't made the same in tips (since I'm essentially losing tips for at least one song). Of course the money isn't all that's important, but with my bills and uncertainties right now about...a lot of things, it certainly helps. Besides, whether or not the audience gets tired of the group stuff, it is hard to do all of the quick changes--especially when your hair doesn't come off backstage haha. So we now open and close with "We Are Family" by Sister Sledge and "I'm Every Woman" by Chaka Khan, keeping "YMCA" as a song we do in the middle (and that's where the quick costume stuff is getting to be an issue). The songs I performed solo on August 4th:

On August 8th, I got to perform for a Charity thing over at In 'N' Out. Sadly, the boyfriend of one of the bartenders had killed himself and so we had kind of a charity thing for him and his expenses and to really just make him feel supported and loved. I didn't know him beforehand, but I couldn't resist helping it. It was hard to meet someone under those circumstances, but it was nice to meet him. Jenny, Amber, and I were the whole Drag portion of the evening, and only performed three songs each. Their mic system was ...not the best, so I had to pull an old-school Broadway and sing from the diaphragm, unsupported. What I chose:

Part of Your World
(I tried to pick songs I thought would be crowd-pleasers and big money-makers. Eh, I was partially right. I think part of it was the silent auction happening, which drew a lot of the money people had brought, so no worries there)
Work on the 11th brought some MAGIC. I was a little off my game that night, due to both a stuffy nose and a special audience member. But at least mom was finally back in town and coming to the shows! In addition to the three group numbers, I performed:

Like We Never Loved At All (with the hand puppet, of course)
Don't Rain on My Parade--although I had planned on Dream a Little Dream of Me, but it wouldn't play in the CD player. :(

Immediately following the show was Ashleey Houston's benefit, which was lovely...in many ways. All of the tips went to Ashley, and even though I had planned to do it, she asked for me to do "Rehab" 'cause she hadn't seen it before. :) So I did:

Rehab (even hotter and messier than before)
...and the CROWNING GLORY of the whole evening: The short version is that a guy came up to the bar and tipped me to make sure the money went to my pocket (I'm sure he had tipped Ashley also). He was 'buying me a drink' and when I unfolded the bill it was a BENJAMIN. Hoooooly Jesus. What else can I say to that? My first $100 Bill. Maybe I'm going places, after all. ;)
P.S. I'm totally wearing glitter, like, every day I work now. Haha it's an addiction I don't want to break, so I won't bother trying. :P

I am now a Checkerboard Ch-I mean, Humpday Honey!!
Last night was my verrrrry first [hired and official] performance at TC's here in Houston. I had a wonderful time ...and a loooot of fun with my HAIR. I saw some familiar faces, which is always a delight, and met some new people (also, always a delight).
For the night I performed (in order):

and our finale, YMCA.
GURL, three hours of singing. Haha thankfully I didn't pick songs that took too much out of me (on purpose), but I was definitely exhausted by the show's end. But I was invited to go out with Alanna and the girls, so I went with my friend K-aos and had a marvelous time at Bayou City. It's nice to know people... that's all I'll say. Haha anyway, I got home around 3 or 4 after hitting Jack in the Box with K-aos. I slept ALL DAY. Definitely going to have to get my stamina up for this three-hour-show/nightlife situation I've gotten myself into.
Tonight is the Ms. South Beach pageant! 10p... and I'm sure there will be PLENTY of pictures, so I'll close with one from Bayou City last night. And keep in mind, this is like 2a after putting on my face around 5p. Nine hours is a LONG time to wear makeup, let alone the mask of it that we drag queens do. This is my "new" friend Angel...

So far at TC's...
Hey all!
This Blogging thing is new so I have to keep up. Here in Houston, there's not much Drag (I'm told), and what there is is dwindling, as many people have lost the drive to try it (again, so I'm told). But I've sung now a few times at a charming bar called T.C.'s over in the main Montrose hot spot. For those not in Houston, Montrose is our ...Gayborhood. Not very big, but it's there. And a good chunk of the bars and clubs geared toward us are there as well, surrounded closely by like-minded shops and restaurants.
So I've sung at this joint, and while I'd recommend it (especially if I'm there ;) ), I thought it'd be best to keep up with my song list, again.
So, in reverse chronological order:
Drag-Off, Monday June 21st:
Featuring 18 Contestants performing for 3.5 hours, each vying for a spot on the regular TC's cast, this was a show, indeed. I was Contestant #12. With Sunflowers in my hair and a nervous spring in my step, I showed "How Lovely to Be a Woman" it is to an audience of... well, a lot of women. So I guess a lot of them knew, but enjoyed the number all the same, it seems. Then I sang my Heart out, all "Alone", which went over surprisingly well. Not that I don't enjoy the number, there were just some people who seemed very into it that I would not usually suspect to be into a song like that. Got my first tip of CHANGE. Haha someone gave me $2.50, very neatly presented. Very strange.
Following that, I cameo'd in the Open Mic night, which some may recall I won last week. I brought out Amy Winehouse and Lip-sync'd a Hot Mess number to "Rehab". Always fun, and got a lot of laughs--though I'm especially glad Rachel and Bret enjoyed it. I knew my mom would :) Closing my set (and the show, if I remember correctly?), I sang "Good Morning, Baltimore". I had never really realized before how great of a song that is for the Gays. I mean, it's about rejection, a desire to be accepted, and a yearn to be a star. How could I not have put THAT one together earlier? Haha a few people in the crowd said I should have used that set in the Competition, and perhaps they were right. I was just nervous about those songs being chosen by other Competitors. Oh well.

My prize for winning Monday's "Open Mic" was the opportunity to appear alongside the usual cast on Wednesday night. I had a wonderful time with my friend Kate and met even more lovely people after my set, including Marcia Mink, who began to educate me on the International Imperial Court System of the United States (and Canada). Fascinating. I didn't know the crowd well going in, so I picked songs I thought were sure to be easy hits--or at least not confrontational misses. I apparently chose correctly, because Tanya Hyde gave me a lovely write up review for my "Part of Your World" (which was VERY shaky with my newly rediscovered nerves)--and people are still talking about it...in a good way. I also brought out Spex's favorite friend, the Unnnamed Hand Puppet--or Unnamed Hand Cowboy?--for my fun Lip-sync of the Faith Hill/Tim McGraw duet "Like We Never Loved at All". I had a blast, and I'm really hoping I perform more at this bar.

Violet's Houston Debut! I gussied myself up and sang "Maybe This Time", which unfortunately (or perhaps, fortunately?) played through with a couple of second-long pauses in the tune. Sure it cracked the mood, but it made it almost painfully clear that I was singing live, and allowed me to, in signature Violet style, poke fun at the lyrics, adding after "All the odds are in my favor", a joking "...maybe not". Which went over very well, so I suppose it was a good thing. :) I didn't realize I would do more than one song (or that I would be the only contestant), so it's a good thing my CD had four numbers. The only other girl working that night was host Jenny LaRue, so I also performed "Somewhere That's Green" and "Never Been to Me", though without any costume changes. But my friends Rachel, Bret, and Stuart all got to come see the show, so that was lovely. Now that my mom is going to be a regular audience member here in Houston, I do enjoy when people come to sit with her.

Violet's Houston Debut! I gussied myself up and sang "Maybe This Time", which unfortunately (or perhaps, fortunately?) played through with a couple of second-long pauses in the tune. Sure it cracked the mood, but it made it almost painfully clear that I was singing live, and allowed me to, in signature Violet style, poke fun at the lyrics, adding after "All the odds are in my favor", a joking "...maybe not". Which went over very well, so I suppose it was a good thing. :) I didn't realize I would do more than one song (or that I would be the only contestant), so it's a good thing my CD had four numbers. The only other girl working that night was host Jenny LaRue, so I also performed "Somewhere That's Green" and "Never Been to Me", though without any costume changes. But my friends Rachel, Bret, and Stuart all got to come see the show, so that was lovely. Now that my mom is going to be a regular audience member here in Houston, I do enjoy when people come to sit with her.
